Top 10 gardening tips for August

It’s August, the holidays are here, and it’s time to really make the most of your garden. Borders are filled with late summer flowers, and there’s plenty to harvest in the vegetable plot!

Chris Whitelock, resident plant expert at Radway Bridge Garden Centre, shares his top gardening tips for August.

August Jobs

  1. Complete the pruning of all stone fruit trees- plums, cherries, peaches and apricots
  2. Summer prune all  fan trained and espalier apples and pears
  3. Prune out the fruiting canes on summer raspberries once they have finished cropping
  4. Dead head lavender
  5. Sow winter flowering pansies
  6. Re seed bare patches in lawns
  7. Cut back overgrown herbaceous perennials
  8. Feed overwintering with a high potassium feed to improve winter hardiness
  9. Start planting bulbs at the end of the month for months of continuous colour

 

And a final tip for those whose borders are looking a little tired.
